Freon™ MP39 (R-401A) Refrigerant

An R-12 Retrofit Refrigerant for Stationary AC and Refrigeration Systems

Freon™ MP39 (R-401A) refrigerant is a hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) retrofit option for R-12 in stationary positive displacement air conditioning (AC) and refrigeration systems that are used mainly in retail food refrigeration applications. It works with existing mineral oil (MO) in many unitary and close-coupled systems and offers comparable performance characteristics to R-12 in a variety of applications, including:

  • Walk-in coolers
  • Beverage dispensers
  • Vending machines
  • Supermarket display cases

Features and Benefits

Freon™ MP39 is a nonflammable refrigerant that is not classified as a reactivity hazard. Freon™ MP39 is:

  • Nonflammable
  • A1 ASHRAE safety rating
  • Low GWP of 1182
  • Chemically stable when used as directed

Many unitary and close-coupled systems do not need an oil change after a retrofit with Freon™ MP39 refrigerant; however, some original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) recommend using alkylbenzene (AB) oil for optimum oil return. A single compressor oil change to AB typically removes between 50% and 80% of the existing MO, which satisfies the recommendations and requirements of most compressor manufacturers. After the oil change, systems require between 10% and 25% less refrigerant. Consult your OEM for guidelines on retrofitting existing R-12 systems.

Regulations on the long-term use of refrigerants vary by region and application, and may change over time. For the latest information, please visit the Regulations page.
